The Rosemount girls golf team wrapped up its memorable spring season with a sixth-place finish at the Class 3A state tournament last Wednesday at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.

The Irish shot a 352 on Day 1 and came back to fire a 344 on Day 2 for a total of 696 in the program’s first state appearance since 1988. Wayzata won the state title with a 622 and Alexandria (641), Edina (650), Lakeville North (681), Andover (686), Cretin-Derham Hall (705) and Mounds View (734) rounded out the eight-team field.

“It was fantastic. It’s a different atmosphere and the air is just different when it’s state. I was just so pleased and impressed with how the girls played,” longtime coach Barry Wallin said. “Our girls played with some of the best in the state of Minnesota and just handled themselves outstandingly well.… I was very happy to beat Cretin-Derham Hall and Mounds View both days. They’ve been pretty solid programs.”

Junior Monica McDonald led the Irish with a two-day total of 168. She shot an 80 on Day 1 and an 88 on Day 2 to finish tied for 36th out of 88 golfers.

“She was very focused and her driver was working well on Tuesday. She was making some nice saves around the green,” Wallin said. “Wednesday was just one of those days, but she stayed with it and still had a good round.”

Rosemount’s next three golfers all finished in a tight pack. Jessica Petersen tied for 49th with a two-day total of 176 and seniors Ashlee Humble and Molly Reber capped off their careers with matching scores of 178 that were good enough for a tie for 53rd. Humble shot a 39 on her first nine holes on Wednesday en route to a career-best round of 82 and Reber bounced back from a 93 on Day 1 to close out the tournament with an 85.

Freshman Gretchen McDonald and eighth-grader Sydney Regalado each shot 190 over the two-day meet to tie for 70th.

“This was a great experience for them to draw from going into the summer tournaments, as well as for next year.… I’m very optimistic with all the work the girls are putting in,” Wallin said. “I’m going to miss the dynamic this year’s group has, but next year is right around the corner and I can’t wait to see how next year’s team develops.”
